You registered.
You got your Tax ID.
You breathed a sigh of relief.
Done, right?
Not quite.
Your tax registration is not a photograph frozen in time.
Life moves. Things change.
You may get married.
You may change your name.
You may move to a new address.
You may change your phone number.
You may change jobs.
You may start a business.
You may close a business.
Your business may move.
Your email address may change.
Your circumstances may change.
And when they do...
Your taxpayer information should change with them.
Keeping your taxpayer record accurate is an important part of maintaining a clean and reliable tax profile.
Why should I update my information?
Think about your taxpayer record as your digital identity within the tax system.
If the information on that record is no longer correct, problems can follow.
Imagine:
Your old phone number is still on your profile.
Your old email address is no longer accessible.
Your residential address has changed.
You changed employers.
You started a business that isn't reflected in your profile.
Your name has legally changed.
Yet your tax record still shows the old information.
That can create unnecessary confusion when you need to communicate with the tax authority or access tax services.
Accurate information makes tax administration easier—for you and for the tax authority.
There's also a legal reason
This isn't simply a “good idea.”
The Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 provides that:
Every taxable person shall, within 30 days of the occurrence of a change in its particulars, notify the relevant tax authority of the change.
30 DAYS.That's the important number to remember.
If your taxpayer particulars change, don't put the update on your “I'll do it someday” list.
Make the update promptly—and within the statutory timeframe
What kind of information may need to be updated?
The exact information requiring an update depends on what has changed in your circumstances.
But changes may include information such as:
PERSONAL INFORMATION
Name;
Residential address;
Phone number;
Email address;
Marital status;
Other relevant personal particulars.
EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION
Employer;
Employer's address;
Employment status;
Other relevant employment information.
BUSINESS INFORMATIONIf you operate a business, changes may include:
Business name;
Business address;
Nature or category of business;
Business location;
Business status;
Other relevant business particulars.
LOCATION INFORMATIONA change in your location may also affect information held on your taxpayer profile.
For example:
Old address → New address
Old LGA → New LGA
Old location → New location
Don't assume that because you have moved, your tax record automatically knows.
It doesn't hurt to check.
What about my tax ID?
Here's something very important:
Updating your information does NOT mean creating a new Tax ID.
Your Tax ID is your tax identity.
If your address changes, you don't need a new Tax ID.
If your phone number changes, you don't need a new Tax ID.
If your employer changes, you don't need a new Tax ID.
If your business circumstances change, that does not automatically mean you should create another personal Tax ID.
The Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 provides that a taxable person who already has a valid Tax ID should not apply for or be issued another Tax ID.
Update your record. Don't duplicate your identity.
How do I update my information?
The current CRIRS Taxpayer Self-Service Portal provides taxpayers with a My Profile function for managing personal details.
This means that where the relevant information can be updated through the available self-service functionality, taxpayers can make a request to manage their details digitally rather than treating every change as a completely new registration exercise.
The basic principle is:
First – Log in → Access your profile (by clicking the profile image, top right of the screen, as illustrated by the red oval in the picture below). From the drop-down, click on "Profile"
Please follow through as illustrated below:
Next
Click on "Request name/phone change" as illustrated in the yellow Rectangle below
Next
Click on any of the request types:
Name change:
Requires supporting documents.
Phone change:
Update your registered phone number.
Email change:
Update your registered email address.
Address change:
Update your residential address.
State / LGA change:
Update your state and local government area
Once you have selected the request, scroll down to enter the following:
New detail.
Supporting documents
Reason for the Change
Once all fields are filled out and necessary documents are uploaded, you can go ahead and → Review your information → Update the applicable details →
Submit request
CRIRS reviews the application. You can track the status of the application below in the request history.
Before you change anything...
Don't rush.
First, identify what has actually changed.
Then gather the information or supporting evidence that may be needed to substantiate the change.
For example:
Changed your name? Have the relevant supporting evidence available where required.
Changed your address? Have your correct new address available.
Changed your employer? Have the correct employer details.
Changed your business information? Have the appropriate business records available.
Changed your phone or email? Make sure the new contact details are active and accessible.
The golden update rule
Before submitting a change, ask yourself:
“Am I updating only what has actually changed?” For example, if your phone number changed:
Don't request a change to your name, address, or date of birth just because you're already in the profile. Know that the change is subject to a review by CRIRS. You would not like to be "caught in a rut".
Change what needs changing. Leave what is already correct alone. This reduces the possibility of introducing new errors into your taxpayer record.
What if I discovered an error?
This is different from a normal change.
Perhaps you discover that:
Your name was entered incorrectly;
Your date of birth is wrong;
Your address was incorrectly captured;
Your identity details don't match your official records;
Your business information contains an error.
Don't create a second taxpayer profile. And definitely don't try to “work around” the problem by registering again.
Instead, use the appropriate correction or support process provided by the tax authority.
The current CRIRS Tax ID system specifically advises taxpayers experiencing inconsistencies in their identity information to review the information and update outdated or incorrect records by making a request online through your profile page or in person at any of our stations across every LGA of the state or any of our stations closest to you.
Correct the record. Don't duplicate the record.
What if my information doesn't match my identity record?
This can happen.
Perhaps your NIN record contains one spelling of your name while another official document contains a different spelling.
Or your date of birth differs between records.
Don't simply choose whichever version you think will make the registration go through.
Stop. Check. Resolve.
Because the current Tax ID framework is built around linking tax identity with foundational identity records, mismatches can interfere with accurate taxpayer identification.
Where a correction is needed in an underlying identity record, follow the correction process of the authority responsible for that record.
What about businesses?
Businesses also need to keep their taxpayer information current.
A business may:
Change its registered details;
Move its operating location;
Change contact information;
Change its business circumstances;
Add or change relevant business information.
Where a change affects the taxpayer's particulars, the appropriate update should be made with the relevant tax authority within the statutory timeframe.
Businesses change. Tax records should keep up.
Don't wait until you need a tax service
Here's a common mistake:
Someone changes their information today.
They ignore it.
Months later, they need a tax-related service.
Then they discover:
“Oh... my taxpayer record is still showing my old information.”
Now what should have been a simple update becomes an urgent problem.
Don't wait for a problem to remind you. Update when the change happens.
Keep your information safe
Updating your taxpayer information involves personal or business data.
Use the official tax administration platform or authorised channels.
Be cautious if someone asks you to send sensitive information through an unofficial channel. And never give someone your:
Password;
PIN;
One-time authentication code;
Banking password; or
Other confidential security credentials
simply because they claim they can “help update your tax profile.”
Help should never require you to surrender control of your identity.
Your 30-day memory trick
Here's an easy way to remember the rule:
CHANGE → COUNT 30 → UPDATE:
Something important changes?
CHANGE
Start your clock.
30 DAYS
Notify the relevant tax authority.
UPDATE
Simple.
The law doesn't say:
“Whenever you remember.”
It provides a 30-day period from the occurrence of the change.
Your taxpayer profile health check
Why wait for something to change?
Every now and then, take a moment to review your taxpayer information.
Ask:
☐ Is my name correct?
☐ Is my phone number current?
☐ Is my email active?
☐ Is my residential address correct?
☐ Is my occupation accurate?
☐ Is my employment information current?
☐ Are my business details accurate, where applicable?
☐ Are my identity details consistent?
☐ Is my taxpayer information generally up to date?
If everything is correct:
Excellent!
You're doing exactly what you should.
If something is wrong:
Fix it.
Your tax record tells your story
Think of your taxpayer profile as a living record.
It should tell the current story, not the story of who you were three years ago.
The person you were when you registered may not be the person you are today.
Your circumstances can evolve.
Your income activities can evolve.
Your location can evolve.
Your employment can evolve.
Your business can evolve.
Your tax record should evolve with you.
Look how far you've come.
You started by asking:
“Why do I need a TIN?” Then:
“How do I get my TIN?” Then:
“What do I need before I register?” Then:
“How do I register?” And now you know:
“How do I keep my taxpayer information accurate?” That's a complete foundation.
You've gone from:
IDENTITY → REGISTRATION → INFORMATION → MAINTENANCE
And that is what responsible tax administration looks like.
Don't think of tax registration as something you did once and forgot.
Think of it as the beginning of an ongoing relationship with the tax system.
Register correctly. Keep your information accurate. Update changes promptly. Protect your tax identity. Stay informed. Because when your taxpayer information is accurate, you are better positioned to manage your tax affairs with confidence.
Email Two-Factor Authentication
Add an Extra Layer of Security to Your Account. Your CrossRiverPay 360 Gov account contains important taxpayer information. Email Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) helps keep your account secure by adding an extra verification step when you sign in.
Where Can I Find It?
You can manage Email Two-Factor Authentication from your Taxpayer Profile page.
Simply open your profile and look for the Email Two-Factor Authentication security option.
Why Use Email 2FA?With Email 2FA enabled:
Your account gets an extra layer of protection.
A verification code can be sent to your registered email when additional verification is required.
It helps protect your taxpayer information if someone obtains your password.
You have greater confidence that only you can access your account.
Keep Your Email Up to Date. Because Email 2FA relies on your registered email address, make sure your email is correct, active, and accessible to you.
Your profile is more than just your information — it is also where you manage important account security settings.
Keep your tax record current
Your taxpayer profile is not something you create once and forget.
Life changes.
Your information changes.
Your circumstances change.
And your taxpayer record should keep pace.
So remember:
REGISTER CORRECTLY. KEEP YOUR INFORMATION ACCURATE. UPDATE CHANGES PROMPTLY. PROMPTLY. PROTECT YOUR TAX ID. These simple habits can make your tax journey smoother and help you maintain an accurate taxpayer record
